Exercise is “medicine
 for you

Exercise is “medicine” for you  There is a region in the brain called the hippocampus. In fact, it atrophies with age, and along with it, cognitive functions such as memory decline.  However, research has shown that an active lifestyle can suppress this atrophy.  In other words, exercise is “medicine” for you.
BrainUp ReMeDy is an app that guides you on the “dosage and administration” of exercise. Learn how to exercise effectively and start a lifestyle that keeps your hippocampus in mind.

Hippocampus: the part of the brain responsible for memory

It is known that declines in cognitive functions such as memory and judgment are preceded by “hippocampal atrophy.” Major contributors to hippocampal atrophy include aging and lifestyle disruptions such as sleep deprivation and lack of exercise.  However, with several months or more of regular exercise, “neurogenesis”—the birth of new neurons—occurs in the hippocampus, making it possible to maintain or increase hippocampal volume.

BrainUp ReMeDy:

An app that incorporates exercise therapy and behavior change theory

Aerobic exercise of at least a certain intensity is said to be effective for the hippocampus.

The target intensity and frequency of exercise vary from person to person.

Most important of all: consistency

Beyond intensity, daily continuity and habit formation are crucial.

Three apps to help you

perform and sustain effective exercise

Management App

A management system that issues BrainUp app accounts and sets personalized exercise intensity for each individual.  While monitoring exercise status, it can encourage ongoing activity.

User App
— BrainUp ReMeDy

An app that responds to the set exercise intensity.  (The page’s text appears truncated in the capture, but intent: the more you use it, the more activity habits take root.)

Support App
— BrainUp Support

An app for supporters that receives the user’s exercise records.  It sends notifications when heart rate is too high or when records are not being logged consistently, enabling safe support for exercise.

Troubleshooting

BrainUp is running on iPhone, but not launching on Apple Watch.

Force-quit the BrainUp app on iPhone and relaunch it.    If it still doesn’t start, open the app list on Apple Watch, select BrainUp, and launch it.

Apple Watch battery drains quickly.

While the BrainUp app is running, it measures heart rate frequently, which can cause significant battery drain. After you finish exercising, try adjusting the app’s active time by closing the BrainUp app on your Apple Watch. To close the BrainUp app on Apple Watch, while the app screen is displayed, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or rotate the Digital Crown to show the close options. Select the close option and tap “Yes” to exit the app.

QR code for app download is not recognized.

The QR code may have expired. Please contact the issuer and request a reissue.

“Please wait a moment” remains displayed.

The BrainUp apps on Apple Watch and iPhone are syncing. As indicated on the screen, the connection will be established and the message will clear after a few seconds to a few minutes. If you’re in a hurry, tap the screen while the BrainUp app is open on your Apple Watch. This will manually send sync information and speed up the synchronization.

“The BrainUp app usage period has expired” is displayed.

The app’s validity period set in the management system may have expired. Please contact the issuer and request continuation of the app.
